BMW announces new F 900 GS/GSA, F 800 GS

With the R 1300 GS debut expected within weeks, BMW Motorrad isn't resting on its GS laurels in the rest of the line. With the new 2024 BMW F 900 GS, F 900 GS Adventure and F 800 GS, BMW says their "new premium mid-range touring enduros provide purist riding fun thanks to even more sophisticated off-road, touring and adventure capabilities." Base model MSRPs and availability dates have not been announced.

All three bikes are bumping up from the previous 850cc parallel-twin motor (detuned for the "750" version) and feature numerous other updates besides displacement. Right up front is a weight reduction for the F 900 GS of nearly 31 pounds (14 kilos); the F 800 GS does not benefit from this weight savings.

Displacement rises from 853 to 895ccs, and the 270/450-degree firing order should provide the typical F-series sound riders are used to. Performance increases accordingly, with the F 900s putting out 105 horsepower (87 for the F 800) at 8,500 rpm and what BMW calls "a much fuller torque curve," peaking at 68.6 pound-feet at 6,750 rpm. Each bike will come standard with two riding modes (Road and Rain), cornering-optimized ABS Pro and Dynamic Traction Control. Other riding modes are available as optional equipment; check BMW's packages on their Configurator Page for more info.

Part of the weight savings comes from the new fuel tank, which holds just 3.8 gallons (14.5 liters) of gasoline (This is about a tenth of a gallon/0.5 liter less than the previous generation's tanks). More weight came off thanks to the new Akrapovic muffler and a redesigned rear frame; all three of these things combine for 19 pounds (8.6 kg) of the weight difference compared to the previous models.

Upgrades are also in store, with the F 900 GS/GSA getting new, fully-adjustable upside-down Showa forks. Dynamic ESA is available as an option. BMW has also worked to make these new GSes more off-road capable, with each featuring lower footrests, higher handlebars and the redesigned fuel tank to enhance standing while riding - plus adjustable gearshift levers and a slightly relocated rear brake lever.

BMW continues to build tech-forward motorcycles, and the new GSes here get LED headlights, turn signals and control lights as standard. Additionally, BMW has included their 6.5-inch TFT display as standard on all three bikes, complete with all the connectivity riders have come to expect from that system. (The Navigation Preparation option is required to install BMW Motorrad Connected Ride Navigator or the Connected Ride Cradle.)

The F 900s come with a 21-inch front wheel, while the F 800 sports a smaller 19-inch front wheel. Wet weights are 483 lbs (219 kg) for the F 900 GS, 542 lbs (246 kg) for the F 900 GS Adventure and 500 lbs (227 kg) for the F 800 GS. The F 900 GS Adventure version will be available in Blackstorm metallic or matte White Aluminum; the F 800 GS in Lightwhite, Racing Blue or Triple Black.
